In 1971 Wayne State University (WSU) in Detroit, Michigan, USA became the fifth MTS Consortium site.

We don't have any written account of the events leading WSU to run MTS and would welcome contributions.

We do know that Frank Westervelt, who was a faculty member at the University of Michigan's College of Engineering, Project Director of the ARPA sponsored CONCOMP Project, and an Associate Director at the UM Computing Center, moved to WSU in 1971 to become Director Computing Services. It seems likely that the decision to run MTS at WSU had something to do with Frank's move or that Frank's move had something to do with the decision to run MTS.

Jim Simmons provided us with a copy of "A Brief History of Computing at Wayne State University (1947 to 1979)", a booklet by Robert Monroe, Computing Services Center, Wayne State University, Detroit, c. 1979, 12 pp., PDF/A.
