You are probably already aware of this but just in case I happen to be the first person going to the MTS archive web site.

Thanks. The message I get is:

The Google Account of a site owner has been disabled because of a perceived violation of the Terms of Service. The site owner needs to restore their Google Account before this site can be viewed.

I've also seen:

Forbidden - Error 404

Nothing more specific than that. This started around 11:15 AM EST today. Not sure what it is all about. I had just uploaded two PDF documents to Google Drive and was accessing the new files via the web to figure out what the URLs to use were in order to link them into the MTS Bibliography page.

I filled out a form that should get Google to review things. Not sure how long that will take. I got what appears to be an automated response from account-support@google.com saying that my account was still active and in fact I can still log in and access Google Drive and Picasa files, I just can't access the MTS Archive site, a Google Sites site. I did find a note on the web that says it can take up to 24 hours for a Google Sites site to be reactivated after a Google account is restored.

I've been assuming that the account owner in question here is my Google account and that still seems most likely, but Gavin and Mike are also site owners and so I guess there could be problems with one of their Google accounts.

This is the second time something like this has happened. The previous time was a couple of years ago.  We should probably start thinking about moving the MTS Archive site to some place other than Google. Unfortunately that will require a lot of busy work and I'd really rather spend my time working to get more material about MTS saved.

I wasn't really expecting anything, but no communication from Google about why the site was disabled or why it was reenabled.

5. University of Michigan Web Archive

FYI

The "Michigan Terminal System Archive" is one of 810 web sites that are archived in the University of Michigan Web Archives. It goes by the name of "Michigan Terminal System Wiki" in the Archives. The captures seem to be done about once a year in November, but are embargoed for six months after capture and so are not immediately available for use.

In addition to the MTS Archive, the U-M Web Archive captures some of the material that the MTS Archive links to. It may capture some additional web pages that are linked to from these secondary pages, but not others. I haven't figured out exactly what it does or doesn't capture. Because the MTS Archive site uses Google Docs (aka Google Drive) and Picasa Web Albums to hold documents, photos, and some videos many of these items appear to be on secondary web sites. Many of them are captured, but some are not.

A link to the archived MTS Archive home page: https://wayback.archive-it.org/5871/*/http://archive.michigan-terminal-system.org/.

The U-M Web Archives are available at https://archive-it.org/organizations/934.

Nancy,

Is the University of Michigan Web Archives site still working?  I see that the "Michigan Terminal System Archive" (Michigan Terminal System Wiki) has been captured three times. The last was on 1 November 2012. The MTS Archive sites doesn't change all that frequently, but there have been some changes and additions since November 2012.

Hi Jeff,

The Web Archives is working but, there is a six month embargo on each new crawl so the most recent November crawl won't show up for a little while.  Thanks for checking in, I'll get the broken URLs to the person who takes are of our finding aids.

4. Domain name information

For historical purposes in case something goes wrong again at some point in the future:

The MTS Archive is currently a Google Sites site. It is associated with the Google account jeff.ogden@umich.edu which is a personal Google account and not a UMICH Google account. The Google Site is free, but it uses Google Docs to store some large documents and Google's Picasa to store photos and videos. I pay Google for some additional disk space for Docs and Picasa.

The domain name michigan-terminal-system.org is registered under my name with MyDomain.com. I pay something like $12.99 a year for this and the renewal date is the end of August.  This happens automatically each year as long as my credit card keeps working.

Name service is provided by MyDomain.com using ns1.yourhostingaccount.com and ns2.yourhostingaccount.com.

There are two subdomains: archive.michigan-terminal-system.org and www.michigan-terminal-system.org. They both have CNAME records that point to ghs.google.com. There was some setup on the Google end of things back in 2010 so that the Google Sites software would recognize the two subdomains as pointing to the MTS Archive site which has the internal Google URL https://sites.google.com/site/michiganterminalsystem/home.

3. Administrative details

posted Dec 17, 2010, 6:08 AM by Jeff Ogden   [ updated Dec 19, 2013, 7:27 AM ]

The domain name michigan-terminal-system.org is owned by Jeff Ogden and is registered with MyDomain.com and MyDomain.com provides the name servers to support the domain. Registration fees are paid for one year and renew automatically (assuming that Jeff's credit card still works).

There are two sub-domains that are used:  archive.michigan-terminal-system.org and www.michigan-terminal-system.org. They both point to the MTS Archive site. There is no additional charge for the sub-domains.

The MTS Archive site is currently a free Google Sites site, https://sites.google.com/site/michiganterminalsystem. The site was created by Jeff Ogden (jeff.ogden@umich.edu). Jeff Ogden, Gavin Eadie, and Mike Alexander are owners of the site. There is a 100 MB limit on the size of the site, so most large items are stored elsewhere and linked from the site.

Access to the Google site is controlled using the free Google Group "# (Pound Sign)". Jeff, Gavin, and Mike are owners of the group. Anyone can join the group. Members of the group may edit and contribute to the MTS Archive. The site is associated with both Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools.

Most photos and several videos are stored on Google's free Picasa Web Albums under the name "Michigan Terminal System Archive". Jeff Ogden is the owner. Anyone can view the albums. There doesn't seem to be a way to give Gavin and Mike edit access other than by sharing the account name and password.

Most larger non-photo, non-video documents are stored as Google Docs (now Google Drive). Jeff Ogden is the owner. Gavin and Mike have edit access. A modest fee is paid to get additional disk space (200 GB). This extra disk space is also available to Picasa Web Albums.

When the Google site was suspended during December 2010 a new interim site, http://web.me.com/mtsarchive/MTS_Archive, was created using Apple's iWeb and MobileMe. The MobileMe account belonged to Jeff Ogden under the name "mtsarchive".  It was a free 60-day trial. The site went away when MobileMe went away.

The MTS Wikipedia articles are stored on Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a world of its own. No one owns anything or everyone owns everything, so ownership is not an issue.

Jeff makes a backup copy of these materials from time to time and plans to give copies of the backup to Gavin and Mike and eventually to the Bentley Historical Library at UM. The Bentley also captures the MTS Archive site in its University of Michigan Web Archive about once a year.

2. Original MTS Archive site restored by Google

posted Dec 17, 2010, 5:59 AM by Jeff Ogden   [ updated Dec 20, 2010, 2:42 PM ]

As of this morning, 20 December 2010, this Google sites web site is once again the main site for the MTS Archive and the two domain names both resolve to this site:

        http://archive.michigan-terminal-system.org
        http://www.michigan-terminal-system.org

The MobileMe based alternative site is in hiatus and is not being updated or maintained. You can still reach the MobileMe site at:

        http://web.me.com/mtsarchive

[the following item was posted on the interim web site that was used while the original MTS Archive site was suspended]

Wednesday, December 15, 2010, by Jeff Ogden

Earlier this evening, Wednesday, 15 December, the original MTS Archive site was restored. In all the original site was suspended for roughly 68 hours, from early Sunday morning until sometime Wednesday evening.

I’m glad that this is resolved.

You can reach the original site using the following URL:
         https://sites.google.com/site/michiganterminalsystem/

So far no communication from Google about why the original archive was suspended, if there was in fact some sort of Terms of Service violation, if it is likely to be suspended again in the future, and what, if anything, can be done to avoid similar situations in the future.

We’ll need to figure out if we want to go back to using the original archive on Google sites or if we should move to another hosting service such as Apple’s MobileMe. There are of course pros and cons to either approach.

Suggestions welcome. Leave a comment here or send them via e-mail to jeff.ogden@umich.edu.

[the following item was posted on the interim web site that was used during the time when the original Web site was suspended]

Early Sunday morning, 12 December, Google suspended the original Michigan Terminal System Archive site for “Terms of Service” violations. Google has provided no additional information about the suspension. I am not aware of any violations and have asked Google to provide more information and/or re-enable the site. An appeal form was filed on Sunday and a form response said “Thank you for requesting an appeal. We will examine the site.” It seems likely that the site was suspended by an automated process. We may not have succeeded in reaching a live person at Google.

If the Google site cannot be re-enabled soon, we will need to make a decision about moving the MTS Archive to a different hosting service.

To check to see if the original MTS Archive has been re-enabled by Google go to:
        https://sites.google.com/site/michiganterminalsystem/home

While the original MTS Archive site is suspended, information about MTS remains available at the following locations:
