Bill Lynch, then at Case Western-Reserve University, spent a
sabbatical year as a Visiting Professor with us in about 1970.
I recall him going down to our machine room, putting his ear to one of
the cabinets, and detecting and diagnosing some characteristic of how
the system was running and using its disks.
Bill, I and a PhD student of mine collaborated on a paper which was
probably directly connected to this incident:
